Why are young children referred for assessment?
Young children are typically referred for testing by a doctor, teacher, speech therapist or other professional because of one or more problems such as:
- Behavioral difficulties or problems at school/daycare.
- Concerns about a developmental delay.
- Concerns about an Autism Spectrum Disorder (please see Autism Assessments).
What is included in an evaluation?
A typical toddler or preschool evaluation may assess:
- Early cognitive development/thinking skills
- Language
- Adaptive skills
- Fine Motor skills
- Behavioral and emotional functioning
- Social skills and development
What should I expect?
An evaluation usually includes:
- An interview with parents to understand/obtain the child’s history
- Completion of questionnaires and assessment materials by parents regarding the child’s development and behavior
- Behavioral observation of the child
- Testing that involves hands on activities.
Parents are present with very young children. The time required for testing depends on your child’s age. Testing is often completed in one day; however, additional days are sometimes needed.
